March 5th—here's where I'm taking my kids this week

Festival of The Kite, Dragon Boats & Festival of Whales

Our free weekly email keeps you in the loop of local kid-friendly events and things to do 🤝

My son Otis turns 6 this weekend!! Five has been the best age ever, I feel like I say that every year but this time I really mean it. He’s still innocent, pure, and full of wonder but he can also hold long, deep and silly conversations. At five they’re really curious and starting to form their own opinions - it’s so fun. I’m like, how can it get sweeter than this?? And each year it always does. Sorry, I’m totally in my feels this week! Birthdays are a big deal in our house, so I’ve been prepping all week and can’t wait to surprise him this weekend. <3

📍 Marina Del Rey
Dragon Boat Festival
Saturday, March 7th (7am - 4pm)
This free waterfront celebration features colorful dragon boat races, cultural performances, arts & crafts, food trucks, and family-friendly activities.

📍 Dana Point (outside of LA but had to include!)
Festival of Whales
Friday - Sunday, March 6th - 8th (times vary)
Celebrate the annual migration of California gray whales at Dana Point Harbor. This coastal tradition features whale watching excursions, a parade, carnival rides, live music, marine exhibits, and family-friendly activities honoring the ocean. A bit of a drive but seems like a full day of kids staying busy and maybe a car nap on the way?

📍 Griffith Park
The Secret Lives of Trees
Saturday, March 7th (9:30am - 11am)
Explore nature with the whole family at Trail Tales: The Secret Lives of Trees. This outdoor event blends imaginative storytelling with a guided nature walk led by a naturalist, plus opportunities for kids to observe, wander, and create nature inspired art along the trail.

📍 Redondo Beach
Festival of The Kite
Sunday, March 8th (12pm - 5pm)
Head to Redeondo Pier for a sky full of colorful kites! Featuring live music, performances, face painting, contests for best and biggest kites, and more! The kids always love a kite event and tbh, I really enjoy it too!

📍 Silverlake
Clown For All
Sunday, March 8th (1pm - 2:30pm)
I’ve loved Lyric Hyperion Theatre since way back when we lived in Silverlake (pre kids!). This playful live comedy show features a lineup of local clown performers bringing games, songs, prizes, and silly audience interaction to the stage for a full family-friendly, all-ages show.

*These aren’t ALL the family-friendly events happening this week in and around LA, just the best (IMO). We keep it short and curated—follow on IG + TT for more!
